ACER CAMPESTREField Maple S W Excellent deciduous hedging plant.  Foliage and young wood red in spring.  Long lasting, gold autumn foliage. Corky, light brown twigs. Tolerant of a wide range of soils, even growing on chalk and on waterlogged sites!  Very hardy. Can also be grown into a round headed tree, which has dense branches - good for screening.

AMELANCHIER - Mespilus FL W Deciduous, upright dense shrub.  Star shaped white flowers are borne from mid to late spring amid unfolding, oval, white haired bronze leaves, which mature to dark green and turn orange-red in autumn.  Fruits are edible.  Height 6m Spread 3m.  Will tolerate semi-shade and prefers a soil that is not waterlogged or too dry. *UK grown but not UK provenance.

BUXUS SEMPERVIRENS Common Box  E F Evergreen.  The British Native Box grows as a bushy shrub or tree.  Fully hardy.  Leaves are oblong, glossy, dark green.  Excellent for hedging and topiary.  Height and spread up to 5m, but usually clipped and shaped.  Grows in any soil, including chalk.  Trim in spring or summer.  Prefers a well drained soil.  Sun or part shade.  If you have experienced box blight in your garden/area – try planting instead – Lonicera nitida, Lonicera nitida ‘Baggesen’s Gold’ or Euonymus ‘Silver Pillar’. UK cuttings.

CARPINUS BETULUSCommon Hornbeam F Oval, prominently veined, dark green leaves that turn yellow and orange in autumn, often hanging for a long time.  Bears green catkins from late spring to autumn, when clusters of winged seeds appear.  Easier to establish on heavy soils than beech, which it resembles.  Stands exposed sites.

CORNUS ALBA Red-barked Dogwood FL W Deep red stems, best colour is obtained by pruning hard in early spring.  White flowers in June followed by black berries.  Tolerant of most soils, including waterlogged ones.  Vigorous growth up to 2m. CORNUS SANGUINEA - Common Dogwood FL W Stems green/red. Leaves gren throughout summer, turning a rich red/crimson in autumn. White flowers in June followed by blue berries. Tolerates most soils including waterlogged sites. A native hedgerow species.

CORYLUS AVELLANAHazelnutFL W Bears long yellow catkins from February to March.  Splendid golden autumn colour.  Invaluable for bleak sites in any reasonable soil.  Sun or partial shade. Vigorous, semi-evergreen, arching shrub. Large, pendent clusters of decorative, bright red fruits follow clusters of white flowers, produced in early summer amid dark green foliage. Require full sun and well drained soil. Height and spread 5m.

CRATAEGUS MONOGYNA - Hawthorn S FL W P Oval, deeply lobed, dark green leaves. Clusters of fragrant, white flowers late spring, followed by rounded red fruits. Tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions, including exposed sites. Will form a dense stock proof hedge and is usually used as the basis of most hedges.

EUONYMUS EUROPAEUS - Spindle FL WDeciduous large shrub. The bark is smooth and grey at first, later becoming pink tinged and shallowly fissured. Leaves are oval, dark glossy green, turning purple-orange in autumn. White flowers appear in May to June and are followed by red fruits.

HIPPOPHAE RHAMNOIDES - Sea Buckthorn FL W P Deciduous, bushy, arching shrub or small tree with narrow, silvery leaves. Tiny yellow flowers borne in mid-spring are followed in autumn on female plants by bright yellow/orange berries, liked by pheasants. Especially good for seaside areas.

PRUNUS SPINOSA - Blackthorn or Sloe S FL W Sloe Gin Ingredient - A large dense native shrub with dark spiny branches, covered in small white flowers during March/April. Bears fruits like small damsons with a blue bloom at first, later shiny black. Prefers a well-drained soil in a sunny or part shade location. *SAP - Side air pruned 1+1 plants.

RHAMNUS FRANGULA - Alder Buckthorn FL W - CAUTION HARMFUL IF EATEN A large shrub or small tree. Leaves turn butter yellow in autumn. Inconspicuous flowers are followed by red fruits, which mature, to black. Very ornamental when showing both colour berries. Makes fine charcoal and is good for the Brimsone butterfly.

ROSA CANINA - Dog Rose FL W P A native rose. Medium sized shrub forming strong prickly stems. Bears pale pink single, fragrant flowers in June followed by scarlet egg shaped hips, which may be used for syrup and wines. Leaves can be used in tea.

ROSA RUGOSA - Ramanas Rose FL W P A strong frowing pertetual flowering shrub with stout densely prickly stems. It's suckering habit enables it to form dense thickets, making it an excellent hedging plant. Leaves are deeply veined, bright gren down beneath and fairly disease resistant. Fragrant purple/rose blooms are followed by attractive bright red tomato shaped hips.

SAMBUCUS NIGRA - Common Elder FL W Easy to grow addition to the hedge row - suitable for any soil or site. Stout corky branches respond well to coppicing. Flat heads of numerouse star shaped cream/white flowers in May/June, followed by dark purple berries in early autumn. The berries are good for jelly, wine and other preserves - and for the birds! Flowers too are used in numerous recipes.

TAXUS BACCATA - Common Yew E F W CAUTION TOXIC IF EATEN Evergreen conifer. Fully hardy. Needle-like flattened leaves are dark green. Female plant bear red fruits. Excellent hedging plant which can be clipped in late summer into a formal hedge. Not as slow to establish as is often supposed. Requires a well-drained site. Will reach 1.8/2.4m in height. YOUNG YEW IS VERY SENSITIVE TO WATER CONTROL, TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE WILL RESULT IN HEAVY LOSSES. PLEASE SEE OUR GURANTEE POLICY ON EVERGREEN PLANTS.

PLANTS

Plants are supplied in a range of sizes and are available from November until March. Exact dates vary according to weather conditions. Orders can be collected from the nursery - BUT NEED TO BE ORDERED PRIOR TO COLLECTION.

PRICES

Prices may vary according to crop availability - but we will not despatch goods until a price has been agreed. For quantities in excess of 500 pieces please ask about a special price. All prices in this Hedge catalogue are inclusive ofV.A.T. @ 17.5% where appropriate.

PACKAGING

Packaging is especially designed to ensure that your plants reach you in nursery fresh condition - if you are not entirely satisfied please let us know without delay. Carriage £10.00 per order up to a maximum weight of 10kg.

CONDITIONS OF SALE & GUARANTEE

ACCEPTANCE All orders shall be covered by these Terms and Conditions of Sale. The placing of an order constitutes acknowledgement and acceptance of these as part of the contract of sale.

AVAILABILITY Goods and services are offered subject to availability at the time an order is received.

PRICES All prices are subject to alteration without prior notice. Prices do not include V.A.T., unless otherwise stated and are quoted subject to collection from the Nursery.

LIABILITY The liability of the seller to pay compensation or damages for any breach is limited to a maximum of the invoiced value of the goods, plants, trees or services at the date of sale.

PAYMENT With order unless by prior arrangement.

DAMAGE OR LOSS IN TRANSIT No responsibility can be accepted by us for goods damaged in transit unless they have been signed for as ‘Not examined’ or ‘Damaged’ or to that effect. The buyer must make a written complaint to us, within 7 days of receipt of the goods.

PLANT FAILURES We cannot be held responsible for plants or trees which fail to grow due to causes beyond our control. Plants or trees found not true to name will be replaced where possible, or the invoice value of those plants or trees refunded. No claims for compensation or for damages arising from failures and/or incorrect naming will be accepted.

TREE MOVING Where trees are moved manually or by our tree spade we make no guarantee as to their survival. No compensation or claims will be accepted for loss of tree(s), or damage to surrounding property, ground, howsoever caused.

PLANT DESCRIPTIONS While we make every effort to ensure plant descriptions and specifications are correct we cannot be held responsible for any unfortunate errors.

OUR GUARANTEE TO YOU – please read carefully

We do hope you will gain many years of pleasure from your new plants, if you are not entirely satisfied with your plants on receipt, please return them to us within 7 days for a full replacement of the price of the plants. If, after following our planting and care guide your plants fail, we will:

In the case of deciduous 'bare root' plants or 'container grown' plants purchased during the dormant season - that fail to come into leaf during the first growing season after planting - we will either replace the plants with plants of the purchased size, subject to availability, during the next bare root season OR refund the price paid for the plants - providing we have been notified of any failures by 31st May. Allow for up to 10% failure of plants from bare root stock.

In the case of evergreen 'bare root' plants - if you are not entirely satisfied with the plants on receipt then please return them to us within 7 days. We will refund the price paid for the plants. After 7 days we regret we cannot entertain any claims should the plants fail. Allow for up to 10% failure of plants from bare root stock.

Our replacement/refund guarantee does not cover:

  • Plants that have not been planted and cared for according to this guide;

  • That have been subjected to adverse weather conditions;

  • That have been attacked by rodents, animals or disease, subjected to strimmer or lawn mower damage - or similar;

  • That have died due to disease

  • That have been vandalized

  • That have been subjected to drought or water logging or adverse cultural conditions.

Plant descriptions - While we make every effort to ensure plant descriptions and specifications are correct we cannot be held responsible for any unfortunate errors - we will refund the cost of the plant only.

Refunds will only cover the cost of the plants - no other costs will be refunded.

No payment will be made for consequential losses or damage.
