Mail Order - Trees are dispatched as Maidens. They range in height from 60cm, some will be single stem; some will have feathers (small side branches). By varying the initial pruning of your young tree, you will be able to decide the style of tree you wish to grow to best suit your needs and space in your garden. We can recommend the RHS range of books for pruning information.

PREPARATION, PLANTING AND AFTERCARE ARE ALL IMPORTANT

Planting Time
The best time to plant a CONTAINER GROWN tree is from September through until mid-June. Exact dates vary from year/year but avoid periods of prolonged frost, periods of very hot and dry weather and periods when holidays will make watering impossible. The best time to plant a BAREROOTED tree is when it is in a dormant state - November/ March again avoiding very frosty periods and waterlogged soils.

Ground Preparation and Aftercare

Please carefully read and follow our advice leaflet sent with all trees -'10 Steps to Successful Planting & Establishment of Your New Plants'. which also offers advice on watering - very important in establishing your new tree. Things to consider.

Planning Service
If you would like help in planning an area of your garden with trees, please send us a sketch of your plot, with sizes, existing features - including fences, walls, trees etc., orientation, i.e. north/south/east/west, soil conditions and any special requirements you would like to achieve. Full garden design and site visits by our expert are also available - please ask for details or go to our Design & Landscaping page.

Please do ask!

A tree carefully chosen & well sited will give years of pleasure, but a tree badly chosen & ill sited will give problems to all.

Advice on tree selection, planting and aftercare is available.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE PLANTING A TREE:

 1. Position

Consider the distance from any buildings, fences, neighbours, drains and underground services. Consider its position in relation to other existing trees & shrubs.

 2. Height

The final height of a tree will depend on many factors. Presenting a definitive figure is unwise. We have therefore included in our descriptions a guide as follows:

 ST = UP TO 25 FT(7.5M)

LS = 10FT - 15FT(3M-4.5M)

 MT = 25FT- 50FT(7.5M-15M)

LT = 50FT +(15M+)

 3. Shade

Consider the shape of the leaves. Large solid leaves will give a very dense effect casting heavy shade. Small leaves or leaves composed of many small leaves - pinnate leaves will cast a more dappled shade and have a lighter effect.

 4. Special Interests

Consider the fruits/berries, flowers, autumnal colours and bark.

 5. Exposure/Pollution

Choose trees that will tolerate and be happy in the environment you are placing them

 6. Damage

Consider the likelihood of damage by rabbits, deer or other wildlife or the possibility of damage by people - vandalism or lawnmower or strimmer! Try to take precautions before the damage occurs. 'Sundries' price list.

 7. Semi Mature Trees

We specialise in semi mature "instant" trees. These are available both container grown and some field grown in season - before deciding to invest in a semi mature tree please read our 'Aftercare of Semi Mature Trees'
