THE START OF SUMMER??

By Jill | July 21st, 2012

Another incredible week on the weather front – more days of rain and dull skies – the light levels in the evenings seem to resemble late September more than mid-July!!

Still – apparently that is all about to change – the weathermen tell us a large high pressure from the Azores will build for next week – and we will be back into the 80’s in temperature – we shall see!!

On the nursery at the moment – we are still taking cuttings and potting on for new autumn stock.  We have also been summer pruning some of our new stock fruit trees – the stock trees get two prunings a year – the first in the winter promotes strong growth – the second promotes bushy growth and gives a better tree shape  – pruned now there is still time for some growth before winter sets in.

On the shrub area – we have a wonderful display of the butterfly bush – Buddleia at the moment – we seem to have a particularly good stock of them this year – especially the much sought-after ‘Black Knight’ – which really is a very dark purple.  Hopefully with the forecast change in the weather – we will see a few more of our fluttering friends – I reckon most of the butterflies so far have been hiding away trying to stay dry!!

Finally – one of our nursery team – David is leaving us for pastures new – and we all wish him well and every success for the future.

THE OLYMPIC TORCH COMES TO CROWN NURSERY!

By Jill | July 7th, 2012

Thursday July 5th was an historic day at Crown Nursery.  The Olympic Torch Relay passed through our part of Suffolk – and through our village of Ufford – and right past the nursery gates – and the changeover of runners actually happened in our driveway!!

Crowds lined the roads in the area – flags and bunting were everywhere – and there was a real party atmosphere. Over 100 children from Eyke Primary School also joined us at the nursery for the afternoon – to get the best possible view of this historic occasion.  The noise and enthusiasm was wonderful – it is unlikely that many of us will ever see such an occasion again so it really was one of those days to remember!!

There are a few pictures from the event on our home page – do take a look!

UNTIL NEXT TIME,

RICHARD
