Wow!  Amazing! Incredible display!

Just a few of the comments from visitors to last Saturday’s Apple Day.  It was a record-breaking day for several reasons – we were really lucky with the weather – we had 198 cars down to the nursery – over 500 visitors – and 136 varieties of apple available for tasting!!  There the numbers are done!!

Apple Day 2012 was a fantastic day – we all work really hard to ensure it is a success – and judging by your comments it was!  We would like to say a big Thank You to all who came to see us – and another massive Thank You must go to the Crown Nursery team and all our extra helpers who came in just for the day.  From car parking to sales to games to teas – to putting up the marquee –  none of this could happen without the team effort so a huge pat on the back for all of you!!  Apple Day 2012 would not have happened without you!

This week on the nursery has seen a return to normality.  Leaf-fall has started in earnest – but not before some fantastic autumn colour in the trees and shrubs. The colder nights have allowed some real glowing tints in the woods and hedgerows – and this is an ideal time to plant to ensure you can get a repeat of that next year!!

Our biggest event of the year has arrived!!  Today (Saturday 20th) – is APPLE DAY 2012!!  We have battled against horrid weather this week from gale-force winds to driving rain yesterday – but we are ready!

Incredibly in such a poor year for fruit – we actually have MORE varieties available for tasting than ever before!!  There are 136 varieties available to taste – 99 dessert – 25 cookers and 12 ciders.

The event is open to everyone and is completely free – there is loads of space and parking.  It runs from 10 – 4 – and as well as tasting there is much to see and do!!  We have a 10% discount off all apple trees purchased or ordered on the day – and there are fun games to play as well!!

A great day out – come down and join in the fun!!

The whole day is a great day out for all the family and great fun –  celebrating that most English of things – the humble apple!!  Do come down and see us!

What a crazy week!! – this time of the year sees our sales areas starting to burst at the seams with new plants.  Several lorries this week have seen some lovely new fruit plants restocking the sales areas.

We now have in stock very fine 2-TIER APPLE ESPALIERS  – these are some of the best we have seen lately –  at last we have finally tracked down the much-sought after BLACK MULBERRY ‘KING JAMES’ – this one fruit’s at an early age in it’s life – and has fab foliage – so definitely one worth having! We also have a new SWEET CHESTNUT – ‘MARRON’  – this one also fruit’s at an early age – and is better adapted to suit wetter soils.  Finally – we have again got some HALF-STANDARD GOOSEBERRIES in stock – we have not had these for a while – so it is great to be able to offer some again – they are a superb idea – a nice bushy little mini-tree – which saves bending-down and also allows for underplanting!  We still have several more items to come – it will be another month or so before the bare-root soft fruit becomes available.   Our sales areas are re-stocked weekly – but our stock is limited – so with the new planting season around the corner – get cracking!!

We are now in the countdown to our biggest event of the year – APPLE DAY 2012 – SATURDAY OCTOBER 20TH – 10-4.  Over 50 varieties of apple have been picked from the orchard this week – and are now safely stored in our Apple Store.  Anybody who grows fruit will know what a difficult year this has been – and Crown Nursery is no exception – some of the skin finish on the apples is terrible – with much scab and cracking – but there are still some quality fruits which will hopefully store well through much of the winter.
