RETURN OF THE ENGLISH APPLE!

By Jill | September 7th, 2013

I love September – it is my favourite month of the year for a number of reasons – but mostly because it is the beginning of a new season of English Apples.

Here at the nursery, we adore apples – and the prospect of a new season of wonderful tastes and aromas gets our juices flowing! ┬áThe first of the new crop are now in our Apple Tasting Shed – at the moment – with the season running about a fortnight behind average – only Discovery and Baker’s Delicious are available to taste – but it will build up in the next few weeks and months culminating in our big celebration of apples – Apple Day 2013 on Saturday October 19th with over 100 varieties available to taste!!

It is not just the look of an apple that we enjoy – it is the aroma – and particularly with Discovery – a bright glossy red apple – it has the most delicious fruity smell – combine that with the ability to pick and eat it straight off the tree when it is still warm from the sun – and you have one of those golden moments in the gardening year that makes it all seem worthwhile.

All the hassle and stress of a hard winter and cold spring followed by a drought seem to disappear when you bite into the first apple of a new season. ┬áThe old adage – ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’ – could never seem more appropiate!

Enjoy the moment while it lasts.

UNTIL NEXT TIME,

RICHARD
